The best drivers simply perform the fundamentals better, and more consistently, than the rest of the pack. However, there's more than one way to hustle your car around a race track, and there are few "absolutes" when it comes to performance driving. Most of our tips are based on pure fundamentals, which make all the difference in reducing lap times. And, some of our tips challenge the status quo, exploring unorthodox techniques that might help you.
Watch our comprehensive overview of precise techniques for navigating a hairpin corner with an increasing radius on the exit and a "false" double apex that you can ignore. We'll show you the optimal line, the braking techniques including trail-braking, how to unwind the steering wheel as you apply throttle, and how to maximize entry speed at this gnarly corner called BlackRock Hairpin at Utah Motorsports Campus.
Attack the braking zone with full commitment and brake pressure. It's violent, not gentle. You pull more G's braking than in any other discipline, so forget about "Limousine braking" techniques. You don't have a passenger sipping tea in the back seat, do you?
You can drive the "optimal" line all day long and still be slow. The fastest drivers can drive the middle of the track and still be fast, because they drive the limit of the car's adhesion at all phases - braking, cornering, and acceleration. The "line" is the natural consequence of driving at the limit.
